Recent research on convertible bonds highlights an important investment insight: attractive investments are not always adequately described by a single return figure or a conventional risk measure. The research presented by Schroders shows that convertibles can participate in a substantial share of equity-market upside while historically experiencing considerably less of the downside. In the period examined, they captured around 81 percent of equity-market gains but only about 60 percent of equity-market losses.

This finding is particularly relevant for Data2Space. The central value of immersive visualization is that it can make structures visible that are difficult to understand when they are reduced to tables, ratios or static charts. The research suggests that the real investment characteristic of convertibles lies precisely in the relationship between different dimensions: equity participation, bond-like protection, correlations and behaviour across different market environments.

Data2Space can translate such multidimensional relationships into an interactive spatial environment. Instead of presenting investors with a conventional chart showing two lines, the asymmetric risk-return profile can be experienced as a structure in which upside participation and downside protection become spatially distinguishable. This creates a different way of understanding investment evidence: the user does not merely read that an instrument behaved differently in rising and falling markets, but can explore how the individual characteristics interact.

The research also points to the hybrid nature of convertibles. They occupy a position between corporate bonds and equities and exhibit different correlations with government bonds, investment-grade bonds, high-yield bonds and equities. Data2Space is particularly suited to this kind of information because spatial representation can preserve the relationships between multiple variables rather than forcing them into a single-dimensional ranking.

This has implications far beyond convertible bonds. Credit ratings, company ratings, fund ratings and country ratings all depend on interacting factors. Data2Space can therefore serve as a visual research environment in which the underlying evidence behind a rating becomes easier to investigate, compare and communicate.

The key lesson from the research is not simply that convertibles can provide an attractive compromise between risk and return. It is that investment quality often emerges from relationships between characteristics. Data2Space makes these relationships tangible and therefore offers a new way to understand the evidence behind financial decisions.
